Pottery Foundation: Level 1
Foundation Level 1 is our most popular course and the best place to start. The course is aimed at complete beginners.
You will learn the pottery fundamentals starting with the properties of clay. You will be introduced to core techniques including, hand building, wheel throwing, surface decorating and glazing and preparing work for kiln firing. You will also learn safe studio working practices. The classes are focused but great fun and taught in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Overview
You will learn to make, decorate and prepare for firing a variety of hand built and wheel thrown pots and vessels. The course concentrates on developing pottery techniques and creative approaches to practice.
You will begin to understand:
- The properties of clay
- Wheel-throwing and hand building techniques
- Decorating and glazing techniques
- Firing processes
- Safe studio working practices
The value in the course is in the learning and teaching, we want all our students to take work home that they have crafted and are proud of. Students prioritise quality over quantity and edit and fire only the very best of the work made in class.

I’d like to repeat what I said in an earlier message about the quality of Alison’s teaching. It’s been a lovely experience to be taught by her for Foundation 1. She’s a great encourager and enabler, full of creative ideas. She explains stuff really well, and strikes a great balance between letting us experiment and intervening with some help.
I look forward to the classes starting again!
