Hyder Daupota talks Tiles
By eds@makingthingswork on 21 September 2023
We are delighted to welcome leading Islamic Tile maker and educator Hyder Daupota to our school and workshop.
Hyder is from a family of traditional Islamic tile makers in Pakistan.
We had a wonderful evening open to the public where Hyder walked us through the traditional apprentice teaching methods and contemporary approaches to islamic tile making and installation.
Hyder is focused on reversing the decline in traditional teaching and we had lots in common as we talked about our approaches to reversing the decline in ceramic craft teaching in Scotland.
Hyder is an MA graduate of the School of Traditional Crafts in London and a Jerwood prize winner. Hyder is Founder and Chairman of NITA Crafts Development Co-operative Society in Nasarpur, Pakistan.
The girls had an amazing experience and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The bug has remained, so I guess I need to source classes in Hong Kong now.
